New video: How Andor brings Star Wars into the 2020s
...by showing the dark side of building a rebellion
Hi everyone,
Happy new year. Thank you so much for your support in 2024. I have some great videos planned for 2025!
And we’re kicking things off with Star Wars - and specifically, Andor, the prequel to the 2016 film Rogue One, which was itself a prequel to the original Star Wars from 1977.
So, yes: a prequel to a prequel.
Yet somehow, it’s the best Star Wars since the company was sold to Disney. And unpacking why that’s the case is what this video is all about.
Spoiler: Andor is so captivating because it reflects the 2020s in the same way that the original Star Wars reflects its own time period: the 70s & 80s. It’s a product of its age, and not trying to be something from the past.
And as a result, Andor reflects things we see around us today - it explores how the optimistic rebellion of Star Wars has to be first created through darkness, and how a tyrannical Empire is actually built by ordinary people.
So, if you’re a Star Wars fan, or just curious about great storytelling, this video’s for you.
Here’s how you can help on my YouTube journey:

If you’re new here:
I think great TV shows are something more than just great entertainment: they have something to teach us about what it means to be alive today. The artists who have poured years into bringing these stories to life have also crafted a reflection on the journey we’re all on, together
For the next year, I’m challenging myself to create a monthly video essay on YouTube exploring this deeper meaning. Thanks for coming along for the journey.
